June 25, 1986, Corinne Butler Williams, with the behind the scene assistance Of Jay Sapanaro founded a board comprising of a group of Substance Abuse Treatment and Mental Health Professionals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey started a Certification Board that is now known as the National Association of Drug and Alcohol Interventionists.

NADAI was established to set, and certify compliance with, standards of conduct and performance of Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention and Intervention professionals.

NADAI has grown from providing certifications to Substance Abuse Counselors and Clinicians in the Northeast Corridor, to providing them nationwide, and to certifications in Bermuda, Africa, England, Canada, Holland and Germany.

NADAI's Certification Standards are created to assure an acceptable level of competency for those in the field of addiction and/or mental health /family/pastoral counseling. The mission and purpose of NADAI is to protect the public seeking substance abuse treatment, prevention and intervention services by assessing the competency of each applicant and awarding a credential attesting to a counselor's/therapist having met the requirements necessary to practice .

NADAI recognizes the whole person in the credentialing process. Work experience, life experience and professional training are all taken into consideration in the competency assessment process. NADAI also provides training and seminars to help ensure that NADAI certified counselors, therapists, technicians and specialists are kept abreast of the best practices and methodologies available.
